Fabric Samples Crafting - Repurposing

I have a couple of part time (or "as needed") jobs that I do when we're in our home area of Port Angeles, WA.  One of those jobs is working for a very talented Interior Designer... and I'm not even kissing up, as she doesn't read this blog. ~grin~  Currently, I'm working on organizing the office area (fabric samples and such).  I worked again today, which reminded me to make this post.

Last week, one of the reps for several designer fabric lines came by to discard old fabric sample books.  I mentioned that all that fabric would make for some  great crafting.  She told me I could have the old fabric sample books, as she would just be throwing them away.  I brought many home.

The fabrics range from sheers to heavy upholstery in weight, and most are sized in the 1ft x 1/2 ft (72 sq. inch?) range.  Also, most have a backing on them that makes the fabric stiff.

I thought of making some pillows, patchwork stuffed animals, and some applique' projects... but I sure would like to hear from you!  Any ideas?  What would you do with all those pieces of fabric?

Michael wants me to make patchwork dinosaurs!  Help!  We don't want a sock monkeys vs. dinosaurs war on our hands! Although, Michael says we do!

  4. What possibilities. What a find! You could make some nice quilted handbags, wallets, etc. Belts, scarfs, a nice dog bed cover with the heavy stuff. We could be here all day coming up with ideas!

  6. Are they large enough for quilts? Maybe check book covers, if anyone still uses checks. Shopping bags. You are very talented so I am sure they will be put to good use.

  7. Pidge, at first I thought I really couldn't do a quilt because of the backing. But you just made me think of quilting a wall hanging.. very possible. Shopping bags is a great idea! Thanks so much for your comment!

  8. Wow, that's fantastic Heidi! Gosh, so many possibilities, only limited by your imagination. Sounds like you're getting some great ideas. And I'm sure more will come.

  9. Sewing hats is easy, you could always make different variations of hats, with matching gloves? Wallets & braided rugs are great ideas as well. I love the look of fabric wall hangings, you could always make a collage out of the different fabrics you have to create different "scenes." I wish I had all that fabric to play around with! I hope you post some of your finished projects :D

  10. Thanks, Leigh!

Laura Anne, I bet you'd find some Yetis (I'm not sure of the plural for more than one yeti) in all that fabric. Hey Girl, if you get to a place where you can get a delivery... I'd be happy to send you some pieces to play with!

  12. I have about 4 boxes of decorator fabrics that I have been using for awhile. I made a bag, a table runner & more recently a king-size log cabin quilt top! I can't wait to see what you do with them!
